Introduction

Good evening all. My name is Toshema Poole. I like to be called Shema for short. I am in my senior year here at Albertus and my major is Sociology. I took  this class because I am always going to events and such and wanted to learn how to take the perfect picture. I am a school bus driver as you can see in my photo. Sorry it's late and upside down.

When is Work Due?

As you know, I am required to take attendance two times per week. I realize that most of you will probably have the most time to complete your assignments on the week-end... With that in mind, I take attendance on Monday morning and respond to work posted by a 9 am deadline, Monday morning.  Of course, I encourage you to post during the week.   I do check the blog daily and do respond in the comments on a daily basis.

Photo students:  It is important to show evidence of editing your work...

Graphic Design students: 1 short Graphic Designer profile with an image and 1 creative piece are due each week and count as 1 attendance each.

Please email me with any questions.  I am happy to talk to you on the phone to help clear up any issues you might be having.

For this week, I want you to post a bio with a picture and get Photoshop installed.  Read the syllabus and readings linked within it and watch any instructional videos linked in the syllabus for this week as well...

Welcome to Graphic Design!

Class begins October 28nd and runs 8 weeks until December 18th.  The main thing to do this week is to get all of the systems up and running.

-Read through the class syllabus linked from the list of links in the upper right of the blog.

-Post a bio and hello to this blog.  Include a statement of what you hope to learn in this class.

-Secure a copy of Photoshop   https://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop.html  You can also complete your creative work at Albertus.  Photoshop is on all of the publicly available computers in the labs and in the Library.

By the end of Week 1, I want you to:

-Post a 1 paragraph review of a graphic design artist found either at the Museum of Graphic Design or through one of the links on the syllabus.  Include an image from their work.  This will count as 1 attendance record and your Bio will count as the other for the first week.  After that, your creative work that you'll post will count toward attendance.  There are two attendance records generated each week.

-Watch some of the videos on how to use Photoshop, posted in the syllabus.

-Let me know if you have any concerns or if you don't know how to do something.  There is a video on how to post to this blog in the list of class links in the upper right hand corner where other important links are located.

-Getting off the ground this week is very important!  The class goes by quickly.  Any delay in learning to blog, installing your software, etc will set you back quite a bit.  There are thousands of tutorials on YouTube on Photoshop as well as the videos I have made for you, linked from the syllabus.

Welcome to Digital Photography!

Welcome to the Digital Photography online class!  Digital Photography is a natural to offer as an online class because of the ease in creating and posting your work electronically.  I find eLearning to be cumbersome in general and have decided to publish the course syllabus on my own website, http://jnevins.com, and run the entire experience using the web, a blog, and a public hosting site.  eLearning currently does not have the capacity to hold the number of images you’ll be posting as part of this class.




Class runs from October 28th - December 18th. All work needs to be completed by then.

There are four elements we need to juggle in order for this to be a successful experience for everyone...

1.  The class syllabus... here are all the assignments and links to readings that you will need to work through the problems for each week of the class. The syllabus is found with this address:  jnevins.com/digitalphotographysyllabusonline.htm or click here.While you are at it, browse around the rest of my site to get to know me better.  I have posted a portfolio of my photography, links for finding galleries and museums online, my teaching philosophy and more. The assignment for each week is posted on it.  Read it carefully and work to incorporate the main idea into your work that week.

2.  The Class Blog.  Here is where we will build a sense of community.  It is important to post examples of your work each week as well as comments about your images to accompany the images posted as well as comment on the work of others in the class... you can ask questions to me personally anytime via email, but here is a public place to offer suggestions, ask questions and just generally where we can create a class environment.  Blogger is very easy to post to...
Your grade is based on your posts to the blog and more importantly your portfolio of photographs, illustrating your understanding and completion of the assignment for each week.  The portfolio consists of 10 images each for 5 assignments, edited from a much larger number of shots taken for each assignment.

 I have added you to the class blog … you need to respond to the link that Blogger.com sent you in order to become a member of the class blog. Once you are a member, you can post there.  I'd prefer to stay in contact with you via regular email. Please email me at jnevins@albertus.edu or  jnevins@jnevins.com. You may call me at home anytime (up until 9 pm)  if you would like to talk personally or to help solve a technical issue that would be harder via email. It is very important to get all technical issues solved and out of the way at the outset, in the first week.

3. Adobe Photoshop CC 2019 is the current version of the industry standard photo editing software.  Students in the day program use Photoshop in all their digital imaging classes and it is installed on all publicly available computers on campus.  You can try out a free trial at Adobe.com/downloads, good for 7 days.  The student full version rents for $9.99/month.  GIMP is a powerful and free photo editor and is similar to Photoshop.  There are numerous tutorials on YouTube and if there is interest and a need, I can demonstrate how to use it in the same way we will use Photoshop.  All of my tutorials on my YouTube channel use Photoshop.

This first week, we must iron out all of the technical issues to be sure that everyone is up to speed.  I have asked for you to post a creative self portrait and to tell us something about yourself.  This is an art course and its primary focus will be on your portfolio as the basis for your assessment.  Study the syllabus to get a sense of what I will be looking for.  Links I have posted to visual images and readings are an important component of the class... I'll be looking at how you are in dialog with the images and ideas linked in the syllabus as a component of your grade.  Also important is that I get a sense of your  spending time at the assignments and are growing in the medium of photography as the course unfolds. Posting your best few  images you are creating to the class blog about twice a week is vital to your success in this class.  Use the comment button to respond to your classmates posts.   I am expecting 7 images per week as the bare minimum… (6 that really fulfill the intent of the assignment and more like 10 would be a better number… this is digital!).  Post your main work on Google Drive.  Share your Drive folder with me.

Any comments, suggestions, or observations as to how I can smooth the way for you as we get going will be welcome.  My goal is your success and your feeling that this was well worth your time.
